SONI (System Operator for Northern Ireland) Statement 22.03.19

SONI is the Independent Transmission System Operator for Northern Ireland. We ensure that Northern Ireland has a secure, reliable and cost-effective supply of electricity.  We provide a critical service to customers, communities and to the economy.

SONI is regulated under a licence granted by the Utility Regulator for Northern Ireland and we operate within the limits of a ‘Price Control’. Ultimately, this ensures that the services we provide are value for money for electricity consumers.

SONI has been part of the EirGrid Group of companies since 2009. Our licence to operate contains conditions to ensure our independence.  SONI is compliant with this requirement and has been certified as an independent Transmission System Operator.

We have been informed by the Prospect Union that its members at SONI intend to take industrial action.

Robin McCormick, SONI General Manager, said:

“SONI regrets that union members have opted for this course of action, particularly as the company recently invited all union representatives to participate in independent arbitration through the Labour Relations Agency. SONI has also made what we feel is a fair pay offer which has been rejected by the union.

“We want to emphasise that we are keen to continue engagement with Prospect and to work through the offices of the Labour Relations Agency in order to reach a satisfactory outcome for all involved.

“The offer of independent arbitration remains on the table and we call on the Prospect Union to withdraw the industrial action notice and to accept our offer of talks through the LRA.

“In the meantime, our priority is to continue to maintain a secure supply of electricity to homes and businesses across Northern Ireland at the least possible cost.”
