Health & Safety

When we manage and develop the grid, we always follow health and safety standards. We prioritise the protection of our workers and those who live or work near our lines. The most common concern about our grid is the effect of electromagnetic fields, or EMF. There is considerable research by independent health and scientific bodies on this topic. There is no evidence that EMF from power lines has any adverse effects on human, plant or animal health.

We recognise this is an emotive and contentious topic, and we respect your right to reach your own conclusions. You can read our explanation of EMF here. We have commissioned an independent assessment of the latest research relating to EMF and power systems. Read this here.

In addition, some projects require their own unique health and safety policy. The East West Interconnector is such a project. It is imperative precautions are taken if works are proposed close to the route of the interconnector. You can find full details of the safety policy here.

Please contact us if you have any concerns regarding EMF or if you would like to know more about our health and safety policy.
