The Grid Code details the technical requirements for connecting to and using the NI System. Compliance with the Grid Code is one of the requirements of connecting and using the Transmission System.
As the code administrator for the Grid Code, SONI maintains and oversees any proposed changes to it. All changes must be reviewed by the Grid Code Review Panel, consulted upon and approved by the Authority. For more information about the code please contact gridcode@soni.ltd.uk

The Grid Code Review Panel is a standing body established and maintained by SONI. The objective of the Panel is to keep the Grid Code and its working under review; to review all suggestions for amendments to the Grid Code; to determine recommendations for amendments to the Grid Code; to issue guidance in relation to the Grid Code and its implementation, performance and interpretation; and to consider what changes are necessary to the Grid Code arising out of any unforseen circumstances

A derogation is a direction from the Utility Regulator relieving the applicant, licensee or non-licensee from its obligation to comply with a technical standard or code which may be required by a licence or by legislation. Derogations are issued in specific circumstances and have a specified duration.

On 14 April 2016, Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/631 establishing a network code on requirements for grid connection of generators (hereafter referred to as ‘RfG’) entered in force. Regulation (EU) 2016/631. The incorporation of the RfG parameters into the Northern Ireland Grid Code was approved by the UR on 16.11.2018.
On 7 September 2016, the Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/1388 establishing a network code on requirements for demand connection (hereafter referred to as ‘DCC’) entered in force. Regulation (EU) 2016/1388. The incorporation of the DCC parameters into the Northern Ireland Grid Code was approved by the UR on 09.04.2019.
On 15 September 2016, Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/1447 establishing a network code on requirements for grid connection of high voltage direct current systems and direct current-connected power park modules (hereafter referred to as ‘HVDC’) entered in force. Regulation (EU) 2016/1447. The incorporation of the HVDC parameters into the Northern Ireland Grid Code was part approved by the UR on 27.06.2019.
