SONI (System Operator for Northern Ireland) welcomes today’s announcement by the SEM Committee regarding the launch of the new Integrated Single Electricity Market (I-SEM).

The new market was designed and is overseen by the SEM Committee and has been established by SONI in Northern Ireland and EirGrid in Ireland through a major programme of work over the past four years.

The new market arrangements integrate the all-island electricity market with European electricity markets, making optimal use of cross-border transmission assets. It is designed to ensure greater competition and put downward pressure on wholesale prices, benefitting consumers.
