This project called for a new 110/ 38kV electricity substation, and is now complete. The purpose of the station was to allow renewable generation to connect to the electricity transmission grid. This station connects to a 110 kV distribution line that runs from Salthill to Screeb in Co. Galway.
We were responding to a significant amount of proposed renewable generation in the West. The existing 110 kV transmission network will not be able to accommodate the amount of wind generation planned for the area. The new substation will also allow the region to utilise its rich renewable energy resources.
It's important to note that EirGrid has a legal obligation to connect those who generate electricity. As the national electricity transmission system operator for Ireland, we have a statutory function. Subject to direction from the regulator, this statute requires us to offer a connection to the grid for those who request it. When an electricity generator accepts our connection offer, we have to meet their needs. This means we are legally required to develop the grid in response to plans for new electricity generation, such as wind farms.
The project will increase security of energy supply to the region and enable Galway to be a net exporter of renewable energy.
This project will support growth and development in the region and ensure security of supply for the future. A strong electricity network will help existing industry in the West. This is particularly the case when competing for business and inward development to the region.
The new connection will also allow the area to utilise its rich renewable energy resources. The development of the renewable energy sector is an important element in driving future job creation. It is also a key step to meet mandatory EU targets that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
