North South Interconnector

The North South Interconnector will add a new 400 kV overhead line to the network. This line will connect the electricity grids in Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Project overview

Currently there is only one interconnector between Northern Ireland and Ireland. A problem on this interconnector could result in widespread power failures. To limit potential issues, we have to restrict the amount of power that can flow through the existing interconnector between both jurisdictions. These levels are well below what electricity users need today and into the future.

A second interconnector would allow the network to operate much more efficiently, and integrate significantly more renewable energy onto the electricity grid. The project is critical for being able to fully utilise existing renewable generation and planned new renewable generation in the future.

The North South Interconnector will start at a substation in Turleenan, Co Tyrone. It will then run into Co Armagh and then into counties Monaghan, Cavan and Meath, connecting the electricity grids in Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Benefits of the project

The North South Interconnector is a significant project for the island of Ireland. It will remove a costly bottleneck on the grid and improve our electricity supply, allowing us to use more of the renewable energy which is available to us.

Deliver savings for consumers

The new interconnector removes constraints which currently add costs for consumer. Recent analysis suggests that the project will save NI consumers approximately £19 million per year, equivalent to approximately £52,000 every day.

A more connected grid means a more efficient wholesale market, resulting in downward pressure on consumer bills.

Combat the climate crisis

With the North South Interconnector, we will reduce our reliance on volatile imported fossil fuels. Our focus can move to using our abundant clean resources.

It will facilitate an additional 900MW of renewable generation - enough to power 600,000 homes through clean energy.

This means it is critical infrastructure to achieve our climate ambition.

Economic growth

Once completed, it will be the backbone of the transmission system. It will support the growth of renewables and support wider decarbonisation of other areas, such as heating and transport.

The North South Interconnector also is essential for the wider economy. With its successful delivery, businesses will have the power they need to grow and create further opportunities.

Long-term security of supply

The North South Interconnector is essential for a secure, efficient and clean electricity supply. A safeguard against supply gaps, it will eliminate the risk of a single event resulting in widespread power failures.

With the new interconnector, we can better dispatch power when it's needed to either jurisdiction. We will be better equipped to react to future changes in supply and demand.

Where are we now?

We have formally handed the project over to NIE Networks, who are responsible for building and maintaining the North South Interconnector.
