Kells Cluster
The Kells Cluster project connects several renewable energy projects to the grid in the Greater Ballymena / Antrim area.
Project overview
In some locations, people feel that electricity infrastructure has a visual impact on the landscape. Cluster connections connect sources of renewable power in close proximity. The aims is to create as little disturbance as possible.
There were already a number of renewable power projects in the Greater Ballymena / Antrim area that had planning permission. This made it a good candidate for a cluster substation, providing a connection to the grid.
The new development includes:
- A 33kV switchroom building
- 2 new 110/33 kV transformers
- A short section of underground cable within the existing boundary of the Kells Main Substation
Our planning application for the Kells Cluster Project was approved by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in June 2022.
Benefits of the project
The project brought many benefits to both the North-East region and Northern Ireland's grid overall, including:
- Supporting Northern Ireland’s transition to a low carbon energy future
- Enhancing security of supply for electricity consumers
- Strengthening the local transmission network in the region
Where are we now?
Our planning application for the Kells Cluster Project was approved by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in June 2022. The project was then handed over to NIE Networks to proceed with construction.
Project updates
September 2025
SONI have transferred the Kells Cluster project to NIE Networks who are responsible for the construction phase of development. Construction on the project by NIE Networks is ongoing and at an advanced stage. It is anticipated that Kells Cluster will be energised by the end of 2026 enabling renewable energy projects to connect to the grid in the Greater Ballymena / Antrim area.
June 2022
The planning application for the Kells Cluster Project was approved by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council on Monday 20th June 2022. This project will now be handed over to NIE Networks to proceed with construction.
