Coolkeeragh 110kV Extension Project

The Project

SONI is the electricity transmission system operator for Northern Ireland. This means we plan for the future of the electricity grid and operate it every minute of every day. We ensure that everyone has power when they need it at the most economical price possible.

To prepare for a clean energy future, SONI must make the electricity grid stronger and more flexible. The grid will need to carry more power, and most of this power will come from renewable generation that varies depending on the weather.

What will the project involve?

There is a need to improve grid strength and resilience in the North West, and to address present and future development needs of the 100kV circuits into Coolkeeragh substation.

As there is no available space within the existing substation, SONI's current preferred option is to extend the existing 100kV substation within the grounds of the Coolkeeragh power station, which is situated at Maydown in Derry-Londonderry.

What are the benefits of the project?

When complete, the new extension of the 100kV substation will:

  • Enable greater use of electricity from renewable energy sources into high demand urban centres;
  • Improve grid strength and resilience in the North West;
  • Allow new connections to the grid stimulating economic development;
  • Help meet increasing domestic and industry electricity demand in the North West;

SONI will prepare a full planning application for the Coolkeeragh 100kV Substation Extension which will be submitted and determined by Derry City and Strabane District Council.
