Coolkeeragh 110 kV Extension Reinforcement

The project is required to adhere to the Transmission System Security and Planning Standards and to future-proof the substation for system reinforcements, including the integration of increased renewable energy onto the transmission system. 

The following pre-enabling works are required to facilitate the development:

The extension itself will involve enlarging the substation compound and construction of an additional seven bays.  The project also includes the repurposing of existing bays and replacement of electrical equipment and infrastructure within the existing substation.

The project is currently in Part 2 of our 3 Part Process. During this stage, we will engage with stakeholders and the local community to explain our proposal and gather feedback. The feedback received will help us refine and finalise our plans. 

Following this consultation stage, we will prepare and submit a full planning application for the Coolkeeragh 110kV Substation Extension. 

September 2026

SONI are now carrying out a  period of statutory consultation to introduce the project to the local community, while also engaging with key stakeholders on our final project proposals.

During this consultation phase, SONI will provide opportunities for the public to provide feedback in several ways:

This consutlation phase provides SONI with the opportunity to gather valuable feedback before submitting a planning application to Derry City and Strabane District Council.

September 2025

The project is progressing through Part 2 of SONI’s grid delivery process.  This involves conducting environmental surveys and analysis, developing our design proposals and further engagement to gain feedback from key stakeholders and members of the public.

Following engagement with the local planning authority, we will submit an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening Request and commence Pre-Application Discussions during October 2025.  

We aim to hold a public consultation on the project during early to mid 2026.

October 2022

We have completed part 1 of our 3 part process. This included engagement with initial meetings held with key stakeholders such as elected representatives, Londonderry Chamber of Commerce and Derry City and Strabane District County Officials.

In 2024, we will move to part 2. This will include public consultation for the proposed Coolkeeragh 110kV Substation Extension project. We will engage again with key stakeholders to enable them have their say before a planning application is submitted to Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Engaging with local communities is essential to our work. We always consult with residents, landowners and stakeholders in grid improvement works.
