SONI launches consultation on ten-year plan to develop the electricity grid of today and into the future
SONI, the electricity transmission system operator for Northern Ireland, has launched a consultation seeking stakeholders’ views on the Transmission Development Plan for Northern Ireland, 2025-2034 (TDPNI).
This ten-year plan is the blueprint for the asset replacement and development of the transmission network and interconnection over the next decade. The draft TDPNI presents projects that are expected to meet the operational needs of the transmission network today and into the future.
The plan fully incorporates information from SONI and NIE Networks’ Joint Programme Management Office, which considers the deliverability of the whole portfolio of transmission reinforcement projects.
Commenting on the plan, Gerard Carlin, SONI Director of Networks and Innovation said:
"At SONI we are focused on investing in and improving the transmission grid, so that every home, farm, business and public service has access to the power they need, when they need it.
“Grid-readiness is a critical part of Northern Ireland’s collective journey to achieving a net-zero power system. That is why at SONI we are investing in modernising existing grid infrastructure to ensure it is more flexible and resilient, as well as bringing forward new grid projects that meet the strategic needs and ambitions of Northern Ireland’s energy future.
“Collaboration is at the heart of this draft plan and through this consultation we want to provide everyone with the opportunity to provide their insights and expertise before the consultation closes on 09 January 2026."
Eimear Watson, SONI Head of Networks added:
“As demand or generation changes, or as the transmission network becomes more interconnected with neighbouring transmission networks in GB and Ireland, the flow of electrical energy throughout the transmission network changes.
“It is our role to ensure that we accommodate these complex changes by modifying or strengthening the grid. This unprecedented investment in the grid will deliver multiple benefits. It will increase renewable integration, increase demand capacity in areas of growth, modernise the grid, reduce constraints, and improve security of supply for everyone living in Northern Ireland.
“The views of stakeholders are crucially important, and we would like to extend our thanks to all those who take the time to respond to this important consultation over the next 12 weeks.”
The consultation on the draft Transmission Development Plan 25-34 will remain open until 09 January 2026. You can access the full draft plan on SONI’s Consultation Portal.
