Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020). In addition to the private investment that this money will attract, it promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.
We are a proud coordinator in one Horizon 2020 project:
And a proud partner in two Horizon 2020 projects:

In 2017, SONI, as part of an EirGrid Group led consortium, was awarded funding under Horizon 2020, the EU’s €80bn research and innovation programme, to begin the EU-SysFlex project.
The project, which involves 34 organisations from 15 countries across Europe, aims to identify issues associated with integrating large amounts of renewable energy and to create a long-term roadmap of solutions.
EUSysFlex launched in early 2018.

PROMOTION is presently the biggest energy project in the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research Program. The project consortium which is coordinated by DNV GL includes 34 partners from 11 countries - all major HVDC manufacturers, TSO's, several wind turbine suppliers, offshore wind developers, leading academics, industry organisations and consulting companies.
PROMOTION aims to investigate the benefits of meshed offshore transmission grids to the European electricity market. The goal is to develop and demonstrate three key technologies: diode rectifier offshore converters, multi-vendor HVDC (high-voltage direct current) grid protection system, and the full power testing of HVDC circuit breakers. Furthermore, proposals for a regulatory and financial framework will be developed that support coordinated planning, construction and operation of integrated offshore infrastructures, including an offshore grid deployment plan (roadmap) for the future offshore grid system in Europe.

MIGRATE, a research and innovation project, is funded under the EU Horizon 2020 research programme for a period of four years, until December 2019. The objective of MIGRATE is to develop and validate innovative, technology-based solutions needed to manage the pan-European electricity system, which is experiencing a proliferation of Power Electronics devices involved in connecting generation and consumption sites. This overarching goal is split into two components combining two time horizons.
MIGRATE applied for funding under the Horizon 2020 funding programme under LCE-6 Call, Low Carbon Energy: Transmission Grid and Wholesale Market and received a grant of €16.8m.
The MIGRATE consortium is made up of members from 13 countries.

RealValue was a project consortium made up of 12 participants, including SONI. RealValue Project aimed to demonstrate how local small-scale energy storage, optimised across the EU energy system with advanced ICT, could bring benefits to all market participants. RealValue applied for funding under the Horizon 2020 funding programme under LCE-8 Call, Low Carbon Energy: Local/ small scale storage and received a grant of €12m.
The RealValue project commenced in June 2015 and ended in June 2018. It involved three physical deployments of Smart Electric Thermal Storage (SETS) appliances in 1,250 homes in Germany, Latvia and Ireland, each representing unique market conditions, representative of the diversity of EU energy markets.
To validate the model at large scale, RealValue used modelling & virtual demonstration to prove the technical and commercial potential of local small-scale energy storage in millions of homes across representative EU regions.
RealValue spanned the entire value chain, from householders, through supply, distribution, transmission and generation, to system operators.
