Network Charges

Network charges are set for the use of the transmission system infrastructure in Northern Ireland for the transportation of electricity. They are levied on both Generators and Suppliers.

The network charges contain two categories:

Generator TUoS (GTUoS)

This charge is calculated based on the Network Capacity Charge Rate (€/MW/month) and the Maximum Export Capacity (MEC) of the Generating Unit.

The development of harmonised all-island transmission Generator charges was an objective stated in the original 2005 SEM high level design.

On 29 September 2011, Utility Regulator of Northern Ireland and the CER approved implementation of all-island Generator TUoS.

Supplier TUoS (STUoS)

A charge per kWh for each unit delivered through the Transmission System at the trading point, designed to reflect costs of the Transmission System that are not recovered through the connection charge, the costs of operating, maintaining and reinforcing the Transmission System where connection charges are not applicable and associated on-costs. These charges are higher at peak times to reflect the higher demands on the Transmission System at these times.

The Supplier TUoS rates are currently calculated at jurisdictional level.

TUoS invoices are issued on a monthly basis to both Suppliers and Generators and payment terms are outlined in the TUoS Agreement.
