SONI Publishes Forward Work Plan 2026/27
SONI is Northern Ireland’s Transmission System Operator (TSO). We manage the electricity system to ensure power can flow safely, securely and reliably from where it is generated to where it is needed.
Every day of the year, our expert teams balance electricity demand with the generation available, helping to keep power flowing to homes, farms and businesses across Northern Ireland. We do not generate or sell electricity. Our role is to operate and plan the transmission system, working with industry, government, the Utility Regulator and our counterparts in the Republic of Ireland.
Alongside operating the system today, we have an important role in planning and preparing for Northern Ireland’s future energy needs. This includes supporting the transition to a more renewable electricity system and the wider ambitions of the Northern Ireland Energy Strategy.
We have now published our Evaluative Performance Framework: Forward Work Plan 2026/27, setting a transparent view of the activities we are taking forward beyond business as usual, that we intend to deliver between October 2026 and September 2027 across our four TSO roles:
Role 1: System Operation and Adequacy
Role 2: Independent Expert
Role 3: System Planning
Role 4: Commercial Interface
Our 2026/27 plan sets out how we will continue to operate the system securely, provide independent expertise, plan for future system needs and develop the commercial arrangements needed to support a changing electricity system.
Together, these activities demonstrate how we are preparing the electricity system for the challenges and opportunities ahead, while supporting Northern Ireland’s renewable energy and net zero ambitions.
