“Power of SONI” report shows delivery of SONI Roadmap can deliver savings on electricity bills

Consumer representatives and business leaders first to learn of report outcomes detailing consumer and system savings ahead of SONI’s upcoming price control submission (SRP27)

SONI, the electricity transmission system operator for Northern Ireland, has launched a new report, the “Power of SONI”, at its Annual Business Breakfast today with key consumer representatives and business leaders from across Northern Ireland.

The “Power of SONI” report, commissioned by SONI and developed by Frontier Economics and LCP Delta, shows that delivery of SONI’s “Operational Policy Roadmap 2025-2035” could deliver £3.8bn in savings to the Northern Ireland economy up to 2050.

SONI’s Operational Roadmap outlines the key operational actions that will be required to transform the power system to achieve Northern Ireland’s climate change ambition while continuing to ensure power flows safely, securely and reliably to every home, farm, and business across Northern Ireland.

The “Power of SONI” report examines the potential benefits and savings that could be realised on domestic and non-domestic bills from delivery of the Roadmap and will support the upcoming price control submission (SRP27) to the Utility Regulator.

Speaking after the event SONI Chief Executive Alan Campbell commented:

“We were delighted to welcome Northern Ireland’s consumer representatives and business leaders to our headquarters to learn more about our work and to be among the first to hear the findings from the “Power of SONI” report.

“We are always seeking to deliver better outcomes for consumers. This report demonstrates the value of SONI’s actions to the Northern Ireland consumer and how increased investment into operating the system can reduce domestic and non-domestic customer bills over time.

“Engaging with consumer representatives and the business community is a priority for SONIWe recognise the importance of partnerships and collaboration in driving our collective ambition to deliver the energy transition and unlock the significant opportunities it presents in boosting innovation, creating jobs, and growing our economy. By working together, we can deliver a cleaner, cheaper, more secure energy future for everyone in Northern Ireland.

Rowan Tunnicliffe, Head of Commercial & Regulation added:

“The upcoming price control submission (SRP27) is an opportunity for SONI to demonstrate the value of the work we do for consumers, the vital role we can play in supporting delivery of the Northern Ireland Executive’s Energy Strategy and the important return on investment that SONI can deliver.

“SONI commissioned Frontier Economics to prepare analysis that helps demonstrate the “Power of SONI”. The report places a monetary value on some of the benefits that SONI’s actions can bring to consumers. It quantifies the financial savings of removing some of the constraints we face as we move to a net zero electricity system.

“This morning’s engagement with key business leaders provided an important opportunity to detail our ambitions as a trusted advisor to those directly involved in supporting businesses across Northern Ireland”.

The Power of SONI was commissioned ahead of the organisation’s submission to the Utility Regulator for its next five-year Price Control period (SRP27).
