EirGrid

North Sperrin Project

Project Overview

To reach the ambitious and challenging Climate Change Act targets, SONI has the crucial task of transforming the electricity system and how we manage it in an unprecedented way. This means we need to plan for more and different types of grid infrastructure to support the flow of more renewable energy across Northern Ireland.

Right now, the transmission network in the North West is already heavily loaded and an increasing number of renewable energy assets are being planned for the area.

SONI is planning to bring forward a Transmission Cluster Project, this would provide a consolidated point of connection for the area and minimise the amount of new infrastructure required.

Benefits

  • Supports the delivery of climate action targets unlocking the potential of wind, solar and other green technologies in the area
  • Enhances security of supply
  • Removes constraints on the grid in the North West of Northern Ireland

Where are we now?

We only plan for new grid infrastructure projects where we believe it to be absolutely necessary, in line with our 3 part grid development process.

We are currently at part 1 of this process: Identifying the optimum solution and what area may be affected. At this stage, we are engaging with key stakeholders and elected representatives.

The public, elected representatives, landowners and local business will all have opportunity to tell us what you think through our robust consultation processes. Your knowledge of the area is important to us. We will consider your views before we finalise our proposals.
