Coolkeeragh - Strabane Upgrade Project
Project Overview
SONI has identified a need to upgrade the grid between Coolkeeragh and Strabane to enable more integration of existing and future renewables on to the system. The project will involve the restringing and reconfiguration of existing circuits to increase capacity.
To meet Northern Ireland’s ambitious climate change targets the grid needs to be made stronger and more flexible to enable it to carry more electricity from renewable sources. The Coolkeeragh - Strabane Upgrade will enhance the resilience and security of supply and allow better management of the level of wind generation in the west of Northern Ireland.
This upgrade includes:
- The restringing and reconfiguration of the existing 110kV double circuit towerline between Coolkeeragh and Strabane
- The retensioning of the existing Coolkeeragh- Killymallaght and Killymallaght- Strabane 110kV circuits
- Works at the existing Strabane Main 110kV Substation
- A new cable section between Coolkeeragh and Mobuoy
Project Benefits

Where are we now?
We are currently at Part 1 of our 3 Part Grid Development Process, where we identify the optimum solution and what area may be affected. At this stage, we are engaging with key stakeholders and elected representatives.
The public, elected representatives, landowners and local business will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the project proposals through our robust consultation processes. Your knowledge of the area is important to us. We will consider your views before we finalise our proposals.
